Understanding the Role: What You’ll REALLY Be Doing

The Business Development and Employment Promotion Officer is the backbone of local economic development at sector and district level.

You will work at the intersection of:

  • Government policy
  • Private sector growth
  • Community livelihoods

This role blends strategy, fieldwork, data, and stakeholder coordination.

Expanded Duties & Responsibilities (Deep Dive)

  1.  SME, Cooperative & Employment Promotion

  • Implement district strategies supporting SMEs, cooperatives, and job creation
  • Support cooperative formation, compliance, and capacity building
  • Promote entrepreneurship among youth, women, and vulnerable groups
  • Translate national employment policies into practical sector-level action

 2. Development of Trading Centers & Markets

  • Promote creation and strengthening of local markets and trading centers
  • Support commercialization of rural production
  • Encourage private investment and structured trade
  • Coordinate with infrastructure and planning teams

 

3 Mapping & Promotion of Business and Tourism Opportunities

  • Identify untapped business and tourism opportunities
  • Conduct opportunity mapping and value chain analysis
  • Promote local investment opportunities to stakeholders
  • Support community-based tourism initiatives

4 Financial Inclusion & Savings Mobilization

  • Lead campaigns promoting savings culture
  • Link citizens with SACCOs, MFIs, and savings groups
  • Advocate for affordable financial products
  • Support access to credit for SMEs and cooperatives

 

5  Employment Data Collection & Analysis

  • Collect, update, and analyze employment data
  • Produce aggregated and disaggregated statistics
  • Support evidence-based planning and reporting
  • Contribute to district performance monitoring

6  Business Development Advisory Services

  • Oversee delivery of business advisory and mentorship services
  • Coordinate training and capacity-building programs
  • Work with NGOs, development partners, and government agencies
