INTRO

Are you a passionate photographer or photojournalist who believes in the power of images to transform communities, influence policy, and tell powerful climate stories? The SUNCASA Project is hiring Photography Consultants in Dire Dawa, Kigali, and Johannesburg to train community members in participatory photography and climate storytelling. This is a high-impact, paid consultancy (15 days over 3 months). Women, youth, and experienced community-based photographers are strongly encouraged to apply.

About SUNCASA (Scaling Urban NbS for Climate Adaptation in Sub-Saharan Africa)

SUNCASA is a 3-year, multi-country climate resilience project designed to build greener, safer, and more inclusive cities through nature-based solutions (NbS) — such as:

  • Urban greening
  • Reforestation & afforestation
  • Vegetated buffer zones
  • Climate-resilient landscapes

Implemented by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and the World Resources Institute (WRI), the project focuses strongly on:

ü  Gender equality

ü  Social inclusion

ü  Biodiversity protection

ü  Empowering marginalized and underrepresented communities

About the Community Angles Initiative

This unique initiative uses participatory photography to help women, youth, and underrepresented communities tell their own climate stories — through their own lenses.

Participants will:

  • Capture real climate challenges
  • Document their daily realities
  • Build advocacy skills
  • Present their work in a high-level exhibition attended by decision-makers, private sector, civil society, and the media

This is more than a workshop — it’s an opportunity to shift narratives and shape policy.

Role Overview: Photography Consultant

This consultancy requires a highly skilled photographer or photojournalist who is passionate about community storytelling, climate documentation, and capacity building. You will:

  • Train participants in photography skills
  • Guide them through visual storytelling
  • Lead a photo field trip
  • Support editing and curation
  • Help organize a final exhibition

Key Responsibilities (Maximized Clarity & Detail)

Component 1: Preparation & Customization

  • Attend virtual Training-of-Trainers (Participatory Photography approach)
  • Customize modules to participants’ skill levels
  • Align training with GESI and climate resilience principles

Deliverable 1:

A strong Inception Report with methodology, training outline, learning materials, and module plan.

Component 2: Workshop Delivery (3 Days)

  • Deliver a fully immersive, hands-on workshop
  • Teach: framing, lighting, composition, storytelling, ethical practice, consent
  • Provide coaching, real-time corrections, daily feedback loops
  • Lead a field photography expedition

Deliverable 2:

Complete training agenda, facilitation plan, workshop tools, and timeline.

Component 3: Editing & Follow-Up Session

  • Conduct a half-day technical editing session
  • Use copyright-free software
  • Help participants build a strong selection of 7–10 powerful images

Deliverable 3:

Finalized photographs ready for large-format printing for the upcoming exhibition.

Component 4: Exhibition & Dialogue Event

  • Assist with event planning
  • Support participants during presentations
  • Liaise with media and communications partners
  • Ensure impactful visual storytelling at the exhibition

Deliverable 4:

A successful and well-curated public exhibition & dialogue event.

Component 5: Evaluation & Final Reporting

  • Conduct qualitative assessment
  • Compile participant feedback
  • Analyze impact and challenges
  • Provide recommendations to enhance future cycles

Deliverable 5:

A comprehensive Final Report (due within 30 days of the exhibition).

Required Qualifications (Maximized for Clarity & Recruiter Appeal)

Proven experience in photojournalism, climate photography, or development photography
Strong background in training, workshops, coaching, or visual literacy education
Familiarity with point-and-shoot cameras
Knowledge of:

  • Climate change adaptation
  • Nature-based Solutions (NbS)
  • Gender equality and social inclusion (GESI)

Experience working with vulnerable, rural, or underrepresented groups

Language Requirements (Critical for Eligibility)

  • Rwanda: English + Kinyarwanda (French is an advantage)
  • Ethiopia: English + Amharic (Afaan Oromo is an advantage)
  • South Africa: English (Zulu is an added value)

Work Authorization

Applicants must already reside in the respective country.
No visas or work permits will be processed.
