Position Overview: Driver, GS2 – FT, Kigali

The Driver will provide safe, reliable, and professional driving services to UNICEF Rwanda’s head of office and other authorized personnel. This role requires discretion, integrity, and excellent knowledge of Kigali’s roads and driving regulations.

You’ll also help ensure vehicles are well-maintained, documentation is accurate, and UNICEF’s standards for safety and service are upheld at all times.

Key Responsibilities

1. Safe and Reliable Driving Services

·       Drive UNICEF staff, guests, and partners to and from official destinations, including remote field sites.

·       Follow all Rwandan traffic laws and UNICEF’s vehicle safety policies.

·       Maintain a professional, courteous, and client-focused demeanor when transporting passengers.

·       Provide airport pickup and drop-off assistance, including minor protocol and customs support where needed.

2. Vehicle Maintenance and Readiness

·       Conduct daily vehicle checks (fuel, oil, brakes, tires, lights, battery).

·       Keep vehicles clean, safe, and fully stocked with essential supplies (first aid kit, tools, logbook, insurance, etc.).

·       Coordinate with supervisors for timely servicing or repairs.

·       Prepare vehicles for long-distance or field missions.

3. Digital Tools & Reporting

·       Use vehicle tracking systems (VTS) to log trip data and promote safe driving.

·       Maintain accurate trip logs—recording mileage, fuel usage, and destinations.

·       Use UN Mobility Tool or mobile apps to manage bookings, routing, and trip updates.

·       Follow all digital fleet reporting and safety procedures.

4. Communication & Emergency Readiness

·       Use radio or mobile communication while in the field.

·       Follow emergency response and incident reporting procedures.

·       Operate basic recovery tools (jack, winch) when needed.

·       Coordinate with UNDSS for safe routing in higher-risk zones.

5. Office and Team Support

·       Participate in team meetings and safety briefings.

·       Support light administrative or logistics work during idle periods.

·       Mentor new or junior drivers on best practices.

·       Complete UNICEF’s online learning modules related to road safety and ethics.

Qualifications and Experience

Education:

·       Secondary education or A-Level).

·       Valid Rwandan driver’s license.

·       Solid knowledge of local roads and driving laws.

Experience:

·       Minimum 2 years of professional driving experience in an international organization, UN agency, or embassy.

·       Proven record of safe and responsible driving.

Languages:

·       Fluency in English is required.

·       Knowledge of French and Kinyarwanda is a strong asset.

 

Required Skills

·       Excellent knowledge of Kigali city and surrounding routes.

·       Skills in basic vehicle repair and maintenance.

·       Understanding of chauffeur protocols and etiquette.

·       Ability to communicate clearly and courteously.

·       Strong sense of confidentiality, integrity, and responsibility.

·       Ability to work effectively with multicultural teams.

·       Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies.

Desirable

·       Clean and verifiable safe driving record.

·       Prior UN system experience preferred.
